Maria Karystianou, president of the Tempi Relatives’ Association, has filed a lawsuit against members of the New Democracy party in the preliminary investigation committee for Christos Triantopoulos, accusing them of violating the constitution by submitting a report without conducting a proper investigation.

Triantopoulos faces accusations of breach of duty during the three-day period (March 3–6, 2023) following the Tempi train collision, which claimed 57 lives.

Today in parliament lawmakers are consider the findings of this preliminary concerning Triantopoulos, and will decide if he should be referred to to the Judicial Council over allegations of criminal misconduct.

Opposition parties raised similar concerns during the first step of these procedures at the end of March, with SYRIZA and PASOK questioning the procedural integrity of the investigation, alleging that not enough witnesses had been called.

Karystianou alleges that the committee failed to call witnesses, gather evidence, or answer phone calls to clarify the facts surrounding the tragedy. She criticized the report’s rush to vote in favor of Triantopoulos, suggesting a cover-up of the Tempi rail crash incident.

At a press conference on Friday, Karystianou expressed her frustrations, claiming that those in power had “discredited the railway”. She further accused the ruling government of controlling the investigation, obstructing justice, and manipulating public opinion to avoid accountability.

“The rulers are burying truth and justice with lies,” Karystianou said.

Her lawsuit targets the members of the New Democracy Pre-Investigation Committee, alleging they acted unconstitutionally in finalizing the report without conducting proper investigative steps. This move comes amid growing public frustration over the lack of transparency and the alleged cover-up following the Tempi disaster.

The Plenary Session will conclude with a secret ballot vote this evening on whether to refer Triantopoulos to the Judicial Council.
