Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE) on Wednesday announced that research by the Italian vessel levoli Relume in international waters between the southeast Aegean islands of Kasos and Karpathos has been completed.
The vessel, managed by the Italian company NextGeo, conducted depth research for the projected project to lay a high-voltage undersea power cable connecting Cyprus with Crete.
The research effort generated headlines this month when Turkey sent warships to the area in a bid to intimidate Athens, with the former claiming the maritime region was part of its EEZ.
The vessel was contracted by the French company Nexans.
In later comments, a Greek government spokesman confirmed that the vessel had completed its research, “all within the Greek EEZ”, and is headed to Irakleio, Crete to refuel, replenish supplies and change crews.
