One man was slightly injured in hooligan-related violence on Thursday in Syntagma Square, in the heart of Athens and across from Parliament, from visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv fans. According to reports, the man, who was slightly injured, was alternately identified as an Iraqi or Egyptian national.
Similarly, the reason for the fracas was also muddled, with some reports claiming that the injured man was wearing a Palestinian headscarf, apparently drawing the negative attention of Israeli fans. Other reports claimed the former threw a plastic water bottle or taunted the Israelis.
Whatever the reasons, the scenes directly across from Parliament were quickly circulated on social media and sports websites.
Maccabi fans also shouted football slogans and lit flares.
The Maccabi Tel Aviv club was hosted on Thursday evening by Olympiacos FC at the Neo Faliro Karaiskakis stadium in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16.
