A shepherd in the village of Anatoli, Lasithi, in the easternmost prefecture on the island of Crete, came across a grim discovery on Wednesday afternoon when he found a human skeleton.
According to a report from the local online news site Cretapost, the sheep herder immediately notified authorities when he stumbled upon the gruesome sight in a remote area of the village.
Police officers and a medical examiner rushed to the scene, and according to local reports, they were able to identify the individual based on forensic evidence and remains that had not deteriorated.
According to reports, the shepherd initially discovered the skull under a tree before finding the remaining parts of the human skeleton, along with remnants of clothing and an identification card a little further away.
The human skeleton is of a 57-year-old man from Bulgaria who gone missing since 2012. A missing person report had been filed by a fellow Bulgarian roommate.
According to the same sources, the 57-year-old had been suffering from psychological problems, and despite efforts by authorities at the time, no clues had come to light regarding his whereabouts.
Following preliminary investigations launched by local police officers, which are still in progress, there seems to be no evidence of any wrongdoing.
