Greece’s ongoing heatwave will continue on across the country on Tuesday along with a high risk of fires, with only the mountainous areas of Epirus, northwestern Thessaly, and Macedonia, being spared through some chance local showers and isolated thunderstorms.
The Forecast
The temperature will range from 39-41°C in the west, 38-40°C in the north, 39-40°C in the eastern mainland, and 33-38°C in the island regions of the Aegean.
Winds will blow from the north, with a strength of 4-5 Beaufort in the Ionian and 6-8 Beaufort in the Aegean.
In Attica, sunshine is expected throughout the day with temperatures ranging from 26-38°C, while winds will blow from the northeast at 6-8 Beaufort in the surrounding sea areas.
In Thessaloniki, local clouds are expected with temperatures ranging from 24-38°C, while winds will be variable at 4-5 Beaufort in the neighboring gulf.
Very High Risk of Fires
A fire risk of category 4 (out of 5) is predicted for tomorrow in Attica and seven other regions in the Peloponnese, Northern Aegean, and Central Greece, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection.
Specifically, a very high fire risk is forecasted for the following areas:
Region of Attica (including the island of Kythira)
Region of Peloponnese (Regional Units of Corinth, Argolis, and Laconia)
Region of Northern Aegean (Regional Units of Lesvos and Chios)
Region of Central Greece (Regional Units of Boeotia and Evia)
As a result of the high risk, the fire brigade will be mobilizing drones to monitor and surveil forested areas and forbid vehicles and visitors from entering national forests, parks and other areas vulnerable to fires.
Special Measures in Athens
The Municipality of Athens will be on alert due to the category 4 fire risk.
According to the municipal authorities, all municipal services will be on standby with round-the-clock patrols.
All major green areas of the city will be guarded, monitored by drones, and water trucks will be available to assist the Fire Service if needed.
The government spokesperson pointed out that the former prime minister expresses his views with decorum, admitting that occasionally Karamanlis has expressed some concerns and reservations, regarding governmental policies.
