Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis announced that this year’s heating allowance will cover all forms of heating, with a 25% higher subsidy for those using electricity compared to oil.
As the minister clarified the heating allowance will include subsidies for all types of heating such as oil, natural gas, and electricity, further highlighting that there will be a larger subsidy for those who use electricity for heating.
As for the application process, it will remain the same as last year, with recipients applying through the same platform. The subsidy amount will range from 100 to 1,000 euros, with the same income and eligibility criteria in place as last year.
The minister also noted that the income thresholds for heating allowance are significantly higher compared to other benefits granted to citizens by the government.
The final amount of the subsidy will be determined based on last year’s system, which divided Greece into different regions depending on the specific weather conditions in each area. He further pointed out that there will be a roughly 25% difference between the subsidy amounts for electricity and oil.
As for the payment schedule, the minister said that the allowance will be distributed in two instalments. The first, larger instalment—around 60% of the total amount—will be paid in December, after some fuel bills are available. The remaining 40% will be paid at the end of the season.
“For the first time, we will also consider how cold it actually was in each region during the winter,” Skylakakis concluded.
