Greece: 8-Year-Old Dies in Pool at Halkidiki Summer Camp

Following the incident, the head of the summer camp, a 34-year-old, was also arrested in the early on Wednesday and brought to the Kassandra Police Department

An 8-year-old girl was found dead in a pool at a prominent summer camp in the village of Kriopigi (Kryopigi), Halkidiki on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 13.

Emergency responders quickly removed her from the water, and two ambulances from the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB), accompanied by a doctor, arrived promptly.

The child was first taken to the Kassandra Health Center, where doctors performed an emergency intubation before transferring her to the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki for further treatment.

The summer camp, situated on the first peninsula of Halkidiki, has come under scrutiny as the prosecutor was notified of the incident.

In the wake of the tragedy, authorities have arrested two individuals. Initially, a 19-year-old summer camp leader was taken into custody.

Following this, the head of the summer camp, a 34-year-old, was also arrested in the early hours of Wednesday and brought to the Kassandra Police Department. The police are investigating the incident and have opened a case file for exposure.

The 19-year-old camp leader has since been released until her trial following a verbal directive from the prosecutor.

The Greek police are exploring two main theories regarding the drowning incident: one that the girl went to the pool right after eating, and another suggesting she left her room during bedtime.

The company responsible for the summer camp has issued a statement expressing profound grief over the camper’s death and has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
