Greek women’s basketball legend Dimitra Zaponidou, born in 1936, passed away on January 24, 2024 at the age of 88, according to Greek press.
Zaponidou was the first captain of Greece’s first women’s national basketball team and is considered to be one of the greatest female basketball players of all time.
She played in the first official game of the Greek National Team in April 15, 1958 and scored over 14 points, leading to the team’s victory over Lebanon.
Zaponidou is considered a legend not only due to her success as a basketball player, but also for her passion for a sport that was relatively underdeveloped for females in Greece at that time.
