A large-scale police operation is underway in the downtown area of Exarchia early Holy Tuesday morning, following violent clashes that erupted on April 12 where vandals torched cars and even an apartment.
A unit from the Greek Police (ELAS) raided an ‘occupied’ building at the intersection of Koletti and Themistokleous Streets, where – according to sources – individuals involved in Saturday’s incidents had taken refuge.
Reports indicate that by the time officers entered the building, it was already empty, as the occupiers had managed to flee through a back exit.
Nevertheless, police are collecting objects from the site in an effort to isolate genetic material and track down the persons using the abandoned building as a lauch site for their activities.
The news comes just days after serious unrest in Exarchia, where unidentified individuals hurled Molotov cocktails at police officers and damaged vehicles.
Exarcheia is a well-known hub for anarchists in Athens.
