Greece’s passport ranks 6th among the world’s most powerful passports opening the door to 188 countries and territories, according to the July 2024 edition of the Henley Global Mobility Report released on Tuesday.
Leading the way with the strongest passport in the world is Singapore enabling its citizens to travel visa free to 195 destinations out of 227 across the globe.
Next on the list are the passports of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain enabling visa-free access to 192 destinations, and in third spot Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden opening the door to 191 destinations.
Greece dropped one spot from the previous Henley ranking but has consistently moved up the list since 2020 when it was in 8th spot. It now ranks 6th together with Poland.
Holders of the Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland passports have access to 190 destinations with the world’s 4th most powerful passport, followed by Australia and Portugal in 5th spot.
The US passport, which was once one of the world’s most powerful travel documents, has dropped to 8th spot allowing access to just 186 destinations visa free.
On the downside, the weakest passport is Afghanistan’s giving holders visa-free access to 26 countries and marking the lowest score ever recorded in history of the 19-year-old index.
According to the inventor of the passport index, Christian H. Kaelin, also chairman of Henley & Partners, the trend over the past 20 years has been towards greater travel freedom, with the global average number of destinations travelers are able to access visa-free nearly doubling from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024.
