In an attempt to address a growing housing problem, Greek authorities are considering offering incentives to those who list properties for long-term rent.
The news comes after Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis suggested imposing caps on the number of days Airbnb-style properties can be leased.
In an interview this week to Action24, Mitsotakis confirmed that the government was examining a new set of rules to tackle the surge in short-term tourist rentals which many argue have led to a shortage of homes for long-term rent.
Mitsotakis went on to add that the government had already taken action to control short-term rentals, including imposing taxation on such activities. “We have enforced restrictions and requirements for those using Airbnbs commercially. Additionally, we will discuss the appropriate duration for short-term rentals,” he said.
If approved, the new regulations are set to go into effect in the fall, with the PM presenting further details during his address to the nation in September.
