The EU’s military operation in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden, EUNAVFOR Aspides, this week welcomed the Hellenic Navy frigate HS Hydra as it was sailing in the Suez Canal to join the force.
The warship entered the Red Sea on Monday, according to the VIMAtodotis column of To Vima.
The Hydra joins two other warships, Italian and French, in patrol duty to protect vital commercial shipping from Houthi rebel attacks – mainly missiles and drones – and to safeguard the right of passage in maritime lanes.
Aspides’ X account posted a Tweet again welcoming the Hydra, replete with photographs. The frigate’s first tour of duty in the specific operation ended last June, when it was replaced by the HS Psara.
Greece hosts the force’s operation headquarters, which is located in the central city of Larissa. The latter is under the command of Hellenic Navy Rear-Adm. Vasileios Gryparis.
“Aspides” is Greek for shields.
We welcome HS HYDRA 🇬🇷 and her crew, who will play a crucial role in our mission by supporting the freedom of navigation throughout the area of operation.
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES remains committed to uphold the freedom of navigation, protect seafarers’ lives and global common goods. pic.twitter.com/X4oyOTspe9
