Former Greek international basketball player Sofoklis Schortsianitis was urgently admitted to an Athens hospital on Saturday night after he reportedly experienced high blood pressure and vomiting.
The former star, who played among other teams for Greek powerhouses Panathinaikos and Olympiakos and was dubbed “baby Shaq” at the peak of his career, underwent all the necessary tests at the hospital, and the initial diagnosis was “Acute kidney injury,” with the cause not yet determined.
According to information, the retired athlete, 38, spent the night at the hospital under the close supervision of doctors and will be subjected to a new series of tests in the coming hours, with his condition remaining stable for now.
Schortsianitis was part of Greece’s best team that won the silver medal in the 2005 Japan World Cup in Saitama, after defeating the U.S. team in the semi-finals, as well as the bronze with the national team in 2009 at the EuroBasket.
The imposing center also played for Aris, PAOK, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Red Star Belgrade before retiring a few months ago in a local team on the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea.
