Greece’s civil protection authority issued an emergency alert on Saturday afternoon, warning travelers of severe traffic delays from Elefsina to Corinth on the Olympia Odos highway, due to an emergency road closure.

The road closure is connected to a fuel truck that exploded on the Athens-Corinth highway at the Corinth Isthmus bridge site, west of Athens, at the 75.5th kilometer of the highway late on Friday.

Following the accident, both sides of the highway, which is the main route connecting the mainland to the Peloponnese, were immediately closed.

This morning reports at MEGA TV said that authorities inspected the bridge, under which the accident occurred, and determined that it would have to be demolished, due to the damages that it sustained from the fire.

As a result, traffic from the old National Highway is being diverted to secondary roads in the area.
