Greek Authorities Urge Caution Ahead of Extreme Weather

Heavy rains, snow and strong winds may disrupt Christmas travel plans in Greece.

Severe weather which may include snow, heavy rains and gale force winds expected to affect large parts of Greece over the coming days has prompted Greek authorities to issue an urgent advisory.

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection is advising travelers and residents to be prepared for potentially hazardous conditions due to extreme weather.

The Greek weather service (ΕΜΥ) is forecasting strong winds, heavy rain, and snow for many parts of the country starting on Wednesday evening through to Friday, Dec. 27.

Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that government and municipal services were on high alert and prepared to respond to the upcoming weather challenges. Emergency response teams are on standby to assist in any disruptions caused by the storm.

For those planning to travel in areas where snow and frost are expected, authorities have issued the following recommendations:

  • stay updated on the latest weather reports and road conditions
  • equip vehicles with snow chains and ensure fuel tanks are full
  • travel during the daytime and stick to main roads when possible
  • notify family or friends of your planned route
  • adjust your travel schedule to avoid peak periods of extreme weather
  • follow instructions from local authorities, including the Greek traffic police.

Additionally, in areas where heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, or gale-force winds are expected, residents are advised to secure loose objects; ensure gutters and drainpipes are clear; avoid crossing streams or rivers on foot or by vehicle during and after storms; seek immediate shelter during hailstorms; and avoid outdoor activities, especially near the sea or coastal areas, due to the risk of lightning strikes.
