Starting on Dec. 11, one day before the holiday shop schedule kicks in, this year’s ‘Christmas Basket‘ program, which includes discounted items, goes into effect, Greece’s Development Ministry announced.
The Christmas basket program will remain in effect until Jan. 3, 2025.
The ‘basket’ program, which applies for Easter and Lenten period, includes six new product categories which the ministry said are “necessary for the holidays”
More specifically, this year’s Christmas Basket (“To Kalathi ton Christougennon”) includes lamb, goat and turkey, as well as traditional sweets such as the “tsoureki” sweet bread, the traditional Vassilopita New Year’s cake, and chocolate.
“The prices of products in the basket are the same or lower than last year,” the ministry said.

To meet the holiday demand, shops in Athens and Piraeus will be shifting to a holiday schedule starting on Thursday, Dec. 12 through to Jan. 3.
According to an Athens Chamber of Commerce announcement, stores in Athens and the wider Attica region will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
