Severe weather with a drop in temperature, snowfall, and strong storms is expected to hit Greece the coming hours.
According to the emergency weather bulletin issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), the weather will change starting today, Sunday, Jan. 12, through Monday, bringing rain, storms, and snowfall.
Heavy snowfall has already begun in Florina, in northern Greece, with snow exceeding five centimeters in some areas, although no significant problems have been reported so far.
The snowplows and “salt spreaders” of Civil Protection are working tirelessly to keep the roads open to all local communities, especially the mountainous ones. Traffic across the entire national and provincial road network of the Florina Regional Unit is being controlled with the use of winter tires.
The areas that will experience heavy snowfall include Western Macedonia (Florina, Ptolemaida, Kozani, Grevena), Edessa, Veria, Katerini, Ioannina, and Metsovo.
Snowfall is also expected in the city of Karditsa at an altitude of 400 meters, as well as in Kalavryta.
Additionally, the lowland areas of northern Greece will see snowfall on Monday, including Thessaloniki, Kilkis, Drama, Xanthi, and Komotini.
Freezing cold will prevail across the country, including in Attica.
According to the forecast by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), cloudy weather with temporary increases in cloud cover is expected today in Attica. Specifically, local rain showers will occur after midday, and possibly isolated thunderstorms will develop gradually.
The winds will be from the south-southwest at 4 to 6 Beaufort, and will shift to northerly winds of the same intensity late in the evening. The temperature will range from 8 to 18 degrees Celsius.
