A very high risk alert for fire in Greece continues, with a Category 4 alert being issued for the country on Friday.
According to the General Secretariat for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the regions most are risk are the following:
- Attica (the areas around the greater Athens-Piraeus agglomeration), including the island of Kythira in the southwest Aegean (this isle continues to belong, administratively, to the prefecture)
- Central Greece (Regional Units of Phthiota, Viotia, Evia, including the island of Skyros)
- The south Aegean (the Cyclades)
- The north Aegean
- Central Macedonia (Halkidiki Regional Unit, including Mount Athos)
- Eastern Macedonia & Thrace (Thasos Regional Unit, Evros, including the island of Samothraki)
- The Peloponnese (Regional Units of Corinth, Argolida, Laconia)
- Crete
Authorities remain on high alert to promptly respond to any fires. The General Secretariat informed all relevant state services, as well as regional and municipal authorities, to stand at the ready.
Citizens are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid activities that could potentially cause fires through negligence. These include burning dry grass and branches, using machinery that may produce sparks, using outdoor barbecues, smoking out bees, and discarding lit cigarettes. Burning fields is also strictly prohibited.
In case of fire detection, citizens are urged to immediately contact the authorities.
