Greece made history this week after reaching 100 organ donations in 2024 marking the fourth consecutive increase in the last few years.
One hundred deceased donors this year have saved the lives of 225 patients through organ transplants while 106 living donations have gone to an equal number of recipients within their families or circle of friends, surpassing all previous records.
“Today marks a historic milestone for our nation’s transplant system. One hundred remarkable families have said ‘yes’ to donating the organs of their loved ones, allowing them to generously give life through their passing – breaking every previous record in Greece,” said George Papatheodoridis, president of the Hellenic Transplant Organization.
Highlighting the important contribution of the ICU staff, Papatheodoridis said that the 100 donations were completed out of 32 intensive care units (ICUs) across Greece.
“Without the tireless efforts of the ICU staff, these donations would not have been possible,” he said.
Papatheodoridis went on to underline the need for infrastructure and human resources that will support the ongoing work of the country’s transplant organization, transplant units, support departments, and laboratories, among others.
