Greece Aims to Improve Road Safety with Smart Detection System

Some 1,000 cameras will soon be monitoring the roads in Attica prefecture 24/7 with violations and fines sent to drivers via text message

The Greek government is planning to install some 1,000 cameras in Attica prefecture – the greater Athens-Piraeus region – and to stiffen fines, as part of efforts to improve road safety.

The news comes on top of announcements earlier this month that ban drinking coffee, water or any beverage by drivers while behind the wheel.

The new rules, which include harsher penalties, will be included in the revised traffic code, which also reportedly prohibits driving with high heels and flip flops. Meanwhile, drivers speaking, texting or looking at their mobile phones while driving will also face stricter fines.

Additionally, as part of the citizen protection and digital governance ministries’  “smart  detection system” drivers found violating traffic code rules will be informed and fined via a text message sent to their smart phones.

According to the ministries’ plan, the smart traffic rules monitoring system will detect traffic rule violations, vehicle number plate and inform the driver via SMS, on Viber, or their tax number on gov.gr.

Fines and other penalties will also be sent to drivers’ automatically.
