A massive Greek flag was unfurled across the sea in Piraeus this week in a visually striking tribute to Greece’s War of Independence, celebrated annually on March 25. The symbolic gesture, now in its fifth consecutive year, was organized by the Municipality of Piraeus as part of nationwide commemorations for the 1821 revolution against Ottoman rule.
The floating flag was placed in the waters off Aphrodite’s Cove in Piraiki, a scenic coastal spot in the port city of Piraeus, with the support of the Association of Greek Navy SEALs Veterans (Underwater Demolition Team). The tribute aims to honor the naval battles fought by Greeks during the struggle for independence.
“With this act, we pay tribute to the 1821 Revolution and the heroic struggles at sea,” said Piraeus Mayor Yiannis Moralis, who attended the event with his family. “At the same time, we send a message of unity, optimism, and solidarity.”

The commemorative event was supported by a wide network of organizations, including the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, the Nautical Club of Greece, the Hellenic Red Cross, the National Emergency Center (EKAV), and the Piraiki Amateur Fishing Association “Agios Nikolaos.”
Adding to the atmosphere, the Municipal Wind Philharmonic Orchestra performed the Greek National Anthem and military marches, creating a moving backdrop for the occasion.
A Local Tradition with National Significance
The symbolic flag display has become a staple of the March 25 celebrations in Piraeus, one of Greece’s most important maritime and cultural hubs. Deputy Mayor Andriana Zarakeli, who oversees tourism and external relations for the city, noted that the event now holds a central place in the local calendar.
“It is now a well-established tradition, and we are proud to host it for the fifth year in a row,” Zarakeli said. “This action allows us to express our respect for the past and our hope for the future.”
Christos Pozidis, Vice President of the Navy SEALs Veterans Association, emphasized the importance of volunteer participation in the event and thanked those who helped make the flag display possible.

Meanwhile, in a coordinated tribute, the Piraeus Tower—the city’s tallest building—was illuminated in the blue and white colors of the Greek flag on March 24 and 25, in partnership with Piraeus Tower S.A.
National Day Celebrations Across Greece
March 25 marks the official beginning of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, a date that holds deep national significance and is observed with military parades, religious services, and civic ceremonies throughout the country.
In Athens, the day culminates in a grand military parade, while in smaller cities and towns, schools and local authorities organize their own events to commemorate Greece’s path to independence.
Piraeus, as the country’s largest port and symbolic gateway to the Aegean, has carved out a unique niche with its sea-based tribute, blending history, symbolism, and maritime heritage.
