A previously announced nationwide strike scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20 is expected to affect school classes which will likely remain closed on that day, according to To Vima.
Teachers are expected to participate in the 24-hour strike, which has been called by ADEDY, the Greek federation of public sector employees.
ADEDY has called on all unions to participate. Teachers’ unions have not yet issued a statement of participation.
The action coincides with a 24-hour general strike announced by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) which mostly represents private sector employees. According to the report, the Federation of Private Educators of Greece (OIELE) has also announced participation in the strike.
The unions are demanding measures to address inflationary pressures and increasing rental and housing costs, and the restoration of collective labor laws.
According to To Vima, on Nov. 20, public sector workers are expected to hold a march in the center of Athens at 1pm and in other cities.
Public sector employees which include grade and high school teachers are demanding salary increases, collective labor agreements, abolition of a 2% unemployment levy, a 12,000-euro tax deductible, and the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th-month salaries.
Meanwhile, in relevant news, schools in Greece will also be closed on Nov.15 as part of November 17 Polytechnic student uprising commemoration events.
