Α fuel truck exploded and was on fire late Friday afternoon and evening at the 75.5th kilometer of the Athens-Corinth highway at the Corinth Isthmus bridge site – due west of Athens proper.
Both sides of the major east-west highway, linking the mainland and greater Athens-Piraeus area with the Peloponnese province, were closed to traffic. Police were diverting traffic to secondary roads in either direction.
A very large fire brigade and police operation was underway at the site, including nine fire trucks.
According to local media reports, the blaze from the accident had spread to the sides of the tollway.
