The body of a local woman was retrieved some 300 meters from a discovered vehicle swept up by floodwaters early on Tuesday morning in the southwest prefecture of Ilia, in the northeast Peloponnese region. Intensive search and rescue efforts are underway for the other missing passenger in the vehicle, the driver and the victim’s fiancée.
According to reports, the driver, 50, attempted to cross a bridge over a creek amid torrential rain just outside a local village. Surging floodwaters overturned the vehicle and threw it into the rain-swollen creek.
Heavy rainfall was recorded along the western seaboard of mainland Greece over the past 24 hours.
