A 40-year-old woman from Komotini has died, becoming the first victim of femicide in Greece in 2025.
The woman, hospitalized for two months after a brutal assault allegedly from her partner, reportedly passed away on January 3. On October 23, she was admitted to the emergency room in Komotini with severe injuries, including broken cervical vertebrae, and was immediately transferred to the ICU at Alexandroupoli General Hospital.
Later, she was moved to a hospital in Bulgaria, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to ERT News.
Reportedly her partner initially claimed that she had fallen into a roadside hole while walking, but doctors, skeptical of his story, alerted authorities. Investigations by the Komotini Domestic Violence Department confirmed that her injuries resulted from violence. The accused, currently in custody, is expected to face charges of intentional homicide.
2024 saw 13 femicide cases reported across Greece.
According to a report by MEGA tv, reports of abuse against women and children by family members skyrocketed in 2024, exceeding 20,000, which is double the number of 2023.
