The first 67 proposals for creating and showcasing the paths and hiking trails that will comprise Greece’s first such outdoor network were approved this month by the relevant ministry.

The 30.2-million-euro price tag for the proposals, which were submitted by municipalities, regional governments and even monasteries in the Mediterranean nation, will be covered by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

While the bulk of the approved hiking and trail routes are on the mainland, with several in the well-known Tzoumerka mountain range in northwest Greece, others are on islands including Kalymnos, Naxos and Folegandros, with the highlands of Crete and even the tiny Cycladic islets of Donousa, Iraklia and Ano Koufonisi also represented.
