Fires Rage in Corinth, on Lesvos

Both fires have caused extensive mobilization from ground teams, aircrafts and volunteers

For another day, fires are raging in Greece -this time in the area of Corinth and on the island of Lesvos.

Fire in Corinth

The fire that erupted in Corinth, in the northeastern Peloponnese, earlier on Thursday in a forested area in the settlement of Stimagka is still burning and is currently moving towards Koutsi village in the area of Nemea.

A total of 159 firefighters with 6 ground teams, 49 vehicles, 11 aircraft and 8 helicopters are currently operating to contain the blaze. Volunteers have also joined the effort.

The fire, burning in a forested area, has reportedly caused extensive damage to crops. As Fire Department spokesperson Vasilis Vathrakogiannis reported: “The fire that broke out today at noon in the Stimagka area of Corinthia is spreading within a ravine with steep slopes and very dense vegetation. So far, no residences are at risk.”

During his interview with MEGA Channel Thanasis Manavis, the mayor of the municipality of Velo-Vocha reported that the area has no water, which is causing problems in the firefighting efforts.

Fire on Lesvos

Another fire broke out in the town of Polichnitos on the Aegean island of Lesvos.

According to authorities, the fire is likely to have originated from a fatal car crash, in which an elderly man lost control of his vehicle, crashed and became engulfed in the flames.

The blaze has since spread to nearby agricultural fields.

22 firefighters with one ground team, 2 helicopters and 5 aircrafts are currently at the scene.
