The driver of a fire engine lost his life on Friday after the heavy vehicle fell off a cliff in northern Evia, and specifically near the town of Mantoudi.
The 45-year-old victim’s body was later recovered by first responder colleagues who rushed to the scene.
The victim and another fire-fighter had been dispatched to the remote and mountainous region to paste posters for the coming wildfire season. Radio contact was also lost when the vehicle went off the gorge near the village of Kotsikias for as yet unknown reasons.
A major fire brigade rescue effort commenced at the scene to try and retrieve the man alive. The other fire-fighter sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and was later airlifted to an Athens-area hospital.
