A massive wildfire has engulfed the Karşıyaka district of Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, into flames, burning since Thursday afternoon.

The fire erupted on Thursday in the mountainous region north of Karşıyaka.

Despite massive mobilization from the fire department, strong winds, travelling up to 80 kilometers an hour, hindered efforts both on the ground and in the air.

By Friday afternoon it had reached residential areas.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority 3,583 people have been evacuated from Karşıyaka and another village opposite the mountain, Aydin, due to the fire.

Official data report 16 houses having been destroyed so far, while industrial facilities have also been burnt down.

High north winds turned skies of Izmir red and the atmosphere suffocating.

Turkey’s Ministry of Health reported that 78 people required medical care, 29 of whom remain hospitalized.
