A brushfire on a mountain outside of the city of Drama, called Mount Falakro, is burning for its sixth day, and reinforcements have now been called in, says TO VIMA.
Mount Falakro means ‘bald mountain’, and is called as such because it is largely covered with grassland and shrubs.
Large efforts have been made to contain and extinguish the fire, which spread quickly due to heat and strong winds in the area.
The fire was started by lightening strikes in two different locations, which created two separate fire fronts that eventually merged.
Reports say that the terrain is extremely rugged, hindering efforts from the fire brigade to adequately battle the blaze.
As a result, aerial means, such as airplanes and helicopters carrying water, have been critical to contain the fire.
Local authorities and firefighters are concerned that the fire will spread further and endanger local forests and residential zones has increased, forcing a doubling of efforts.
Reinforcements have been called in from Alexandroupoli, Xanthi, and as of this morning, Athens.
Temperatures will remain high in Greece for the next few days, with the civil protection authority reminding residents on a daily basis that Greece is at a high risk for fires.
