A massive fire erupted on Tuesday at a two-story bread factory in Koropi, East Attica, causing significant damage to the facility’s logistics center and warehouse.
The blaze, which started at 5:45 p.m. in the storage area of the Apollonion factory, part of the Karamolegos Group, is still raging, according to the Greek fire service.
Initially, 21 firefighters and seven fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, with nearby roads, including Hephaestou Road, closed to traffic to aid emergency efforts. As the fire intensified, additional firefighting teams and vehicles were sent to the location.
Employees were safely evacuated and no injuries have been reported. However, the company, a historic bread-making business with a legacy of over 72 years and 500 employees, has suffered extensive losses as its warehouse and logistics offices have been consumed by the flames.
Karamolegos issued a statement later on Tuesday evening noting that all safety protocols were promptly implemented, ensuring the safe and timely evacuation of all personnel.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Fire Department and its dedicated personnel for their swift and effective response, as well as to our employees for their cooperation and composure from the very beginning,” the company stated.
Mesogianews reports that extinguishing the fire is proving difficult due to the presence of polyurethane panels and other highly flammable materials inside the building.
