First responders rushed to control a fire in Markopoulo, a town east of Athens proper, located near Athens International Airport. Initial reports of the fire breaking out were received shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The latest information suggests the fire is currently held under control.

Responding at the scene is a team of 2 ground units, 23 vehicles, 65 firefighters, 4 aircraft, and 2 helicopters that remain in the area.

Traffic regulations have been implemented for nearby roadways as a precaution. The aforementioned diversions are being conducted between Leoforos Markopoulou (Markopoulo Avenue) and Ag. Panton Street.

The event comes during a high-risk week for wildfires after weather forecasts predicted dry conditions, strong winds and heatwaves.
