Another femicide has been reported in Greece.
This incident of femicide occurred in Sitochori, a village in the Municipality of Visaltia, Serres, in Northern Greece early Wednesday morning. A 59-year-old man called the police around 8:30 AM, confessing that he had killed his 52-year-old wife, according to the Athens News Agency.
Law enforcement went to the scene, looking for the perpetrator inside the house. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact him, authorities reportedly entered the residence, where they discovered the victim’s body. However, the perpetrator was not on the scene.
According to local media Epiloges, authorities found the confessed killer later set himself on fire in a barn just outside the village.
A report from a forensic pathologist will determine the woman’s cause of death.
Gender-based violence is an unmitigated problem in Greece. A recent survey conducted by the National Center for Social Research found that nearly half of all Greek women aged 18 to 74 have experienced intimate partner violence.
While Greece does not maintain an official count of femicide cases, data from the Greek team of the European Observatory of Femicide recorded 19 femicides in 2024 and 15 in 2023.
