A Greek court has sentenced a 51-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife in January 2024. The femicide took place in a suburb of Athens where the man doused his 44-year-old wife with gasoline inside their family home and set her on fire in front of their children, according to reports at Ta Nea.
The fire spread quickly, causing severe burns to the victim, who later died in the hospital, and minor injuries to the couple’s two sons as they tried to extinguish the flames.
The court also imposed an additional 10-year sentence for arson, rejecting the defendant’s claims of diminished responsibility due to drug use and psychiatric issues. It ruled that the crime was premeditated, committed with full awareness and intent.
The case has drawn significant public attention in Greece, highlighting ongoing concerns about femicide and domestic violence. The family’s lawyer emphasized the heinous nature of the act and noted the perpetrator’s lack of remorse, even a year after the crime.
