Farmers in Greece are planning a massive blockade in Athens tomorrow, aiming to inhibit passage on streets, at customs and at ports, according to reports at toVima.gr.
Approximately 100 tractors, originating from the flood-stricken region of Thessaly, will head down Greece’s national highway, to draw attention to their issues and participate in a demonstration in front of the Greek Parliament at Syntagma square.
The tractors are expected to reach Athinon Avenue, Karaiskaki square and then the heart of Athens in Omonia. The tractors will be accompanied by police throughout the entire blockade.
The Ministry of Citizens Protection, Chief of Police and police officers met last night to discuss the blockade and prepare accordingly.
Tomorrow’s mobilizations are part of ongoing blockades throughout different regions of Greece as the agricultural sector, which has been plagued by issues for decades, now feels the additional impact of climate change and extreme weather.
The problems are not unique to Greece, however, with massive protests and blockades by farmers held in Brussels at the beginning of February.
