A 44-year-old woman met a tragic fate Friday night in the mountainous resort town of Litochoro, beneath Mt. Olympus in the central Macedonia prefecture of Pieria, when a massive branch from a plane tree fell and crushed as she was sitting beneath with her family.

According to local authorities, the family was seated in an outdoor area of a convenience store-cafe when the incident occurred, at around 10 p.m.

The woman was seroiusly injured and transported by an ambulance to a local hospital in the nearby city of Katerini, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The manager of the establishment was arrested, and a preliminary investigation is being conducted by the local police precinct.

Main squares in many mountainous and rural Greek villages are dominated by one or more massive plane trees, usually with a spring-fountain nearby, serving as a popular location for coffee shops, cafes and restaurants.
