According to a recent Eurostat report, life expectancy in Greece was up to 80.8 years in 2022. The data show an increase in life expectancy in the country which had been on a steady decline from 81.9 years in 2018 to 80.2 years in 2021.
According to the data, the regions with the highest life expectancy in the country are Epirus in western Greece at 82.7 years, the north Aegean at 82.3 years and Crete at 81.7 years.
On a EU scale, life expectancy at birth was 80.6 in 2022, up 0.5 years from the previous year. The data have been on a steady increase since 2002 (at 77.6 years) reaching 81.3 years in 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic, however, brought the number down to 80.4 in 2020 and 80.1 in 2021.
According to the report, the highest life expectancies in the EU at birth were recorded in the Spanish region of Comunidad de Madrid (85.2 years), followed by Provincia Autonoma di Trento in Italy (84.4 years), Ile de France in France (84.1 years), Stockholm in Sweden (84.0 years), and Comunidad Foral de Navarra in Spain (83.9 years).
Moreover, in 2022 women in the EU lived 5.4 years longer on average than men, with significant variations between EU countries. The countries with the largest differences in life expectancy between women and men were recorded in Latvia (10 years), followed by Estonia and Lithuania (both 8.7 years).The smallest gender gaps were recorded in the Netherlands (2.9 years), Ireland (3.3 years), and Sweden (3.4 years). In Greece, women were expected to live 5.1 years more than men.
