Greece is home to the largest number of over-qualified non-EU citizens, according to data released by Eurostat.
More specifically, Greece reported the highest percentage of over-qualified non-EU workers at 69.6%, followed by Italy (64.1%), and Spain (56.0%).
Over-qualification rates of EU citizens working in other member states were highest in Italy (45.1%), Cyprus (43.1%), and Spain (42.3%).
Greece also reported a high number of nationals who were over qualified for their jobs at 31.1% after Spain where the percentage was 34.4%.
Overall in 2023, nearly 39.4% of non-nationals working in the European Union were over-qualified for their jobs, nearly double the percentage of EU nationals which stands at 20.8%.
The EU report also identifies a significant gender gap in over-qualification rates. Over-qualification rates among female non-EU citizens was 6.7 pp higher than the rate of their male counterparts; 3.2 pp higher for EU citizens, and 1.2 pp for residents.
