A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Thursday according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, leading to an immediate tsunami warning.
As reported the advisory targets southern Japan, with anticipated wave heights of at least one meter. The tsunami advisory affects the eastern and southern shores of Kyushu island as well as the southern coast of the island of Shikoku.
The quake, which struck less than 20 miles from Miyazaki’s coast, was initially estimated at 6.9 by the Meteorological Agency but was later updated to 7.1.
