Eager Lion 24: Greek Participation in Mideast Military Exercise

Eager Lion 24 was hosted in the Middle East country of Jordan, and was designed to exchange military expertise and improve interoperability among allies

Members of the Greek armed forces joined personnel from the special warfare command (SWC) to participate in a large-scale military exercise codenamed “Eager Lion 24”, and held in Jordan between May 12 to May 23.

“Eager Lion 24” is a multilateral exercise hosted in the Middle East country and designed to exchange military expertise, and improve interoperability among partner nations. Thirty-three countries participated in the exercise, including Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Poland, Canada, the United States, Kenya, Japan, Iraq, France, the United Kingdom, Kuwait, Cyprus and Egypt.

According to the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS), “this year’s scenario involved addressing regional challenges across all dimensions of the battlefield, as well as supporting multinational disaster response operations and providing humanitarian assistance.” Demanding activities were conducted during the event, such as live-fire exercises, free-fall jumps, urban and maritime combat, among many others.

The commander of the SWC Lt-Gen. Prokopios Mavraganis as well as the representative of the Chief of the HNDGS, Gen. Dimitrios Choupis, attended part of the exercise activities.

The “VIMAtodotis” column in the Athens weekly TO VIMA commented that “it is now evident that our Greek commandos are highly regarded by our allies.”

According to the Greek defense ministry’s site, “This year’s scenario involved addressing regional challenges across all dimensions of the battlefield, as well as supporting multinational disaster response operations and providing humanitarian assistance.”
