Police Seize 17kg Cocaine at Athens Intl. Airport, Two Arrested

Two individuals reportedly involved in drug smuggling in Greece were arrested by law enforcement agents at the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” on Wednesday morning.

The suspects, a 30-year-old and a 28-year-old, are members of an international criminal organization involved in drug trafficking via air routes. Authorities from the Organized Crime Division’s Drug Enforcement Subdivision are also searching for a third suspect linked to the case.

Police identified the 30-year-old suspect as part of ongoing efforts to prevent drug smuggling in Greece through air travel through profiling techniques. The man had reportedly arrived in Greece from a foreign country, carrying the narcotics under the instructions of an unidentified accomplice who remains at large.

The drugs, hidden in two suitcases, consisted of 16 unevenly weighted nylon packages containing a total of 17.133 kilograms of cocaine. The 30-year-old suspect had been tasked with delivering the narcotics to the 28-year-old accomplice, who was waiting outside the airport.

During the police operation, authorities also seized a private vehicle, two suitcases, three mobile phones, and €590 in cash.

According to reports, the 30-year-old suspect had prior run-ins with law enforcement for similar drug-related offenses. Both detainees have been brought before the competent prosecutorial authority.
