The first nationwide European Digital Innovation Hub in Agri-Food, DigiAgriFood, was officially presented during an informational event in Thessaly, organized by the Region of Thessaly and the University of Thessaly.
The event, part of the program DigiAgriFood: Digital Transformation and Green Transition of the Agri-Food Value Chain in Central and Northern Greece, was inaugurated by the project’s scientific coordinator, Professor Zisis Mamouris from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. Professor Mamouris emphasized that the hub aims to facilitate the agri-food sector’s digital and green transition, consolidating scientific knowledge and disseminating it to farmers via a national and international network.
The Governor of Thessaly highlighted the compatibility of the hub with the Thessaly Agri-Food Partnership, approved by the Regional Council, and the region’s significant contributions to Greece’s GDP through its primary and secondary production.
Drawing inspiration from New Zealand’s cooperative model, which generates €30 billion in food exports, he called on cooperatives and companies to support the hub to establish Thessaly’s own successful agri-food model.
The Mayor of Larissa, Thessaly, the largest city in the region, welcomed the collaboration between the university and the Thessaly Region, advocating for synergies. He emphasized the city’s goal to be outward-looking and innovative, leveraging its comparative advantages in agri-food and advanced technologies.
Experts outlined ways in which producers could benefit from the DigiAgriFood hub, including increased productivity and efficiency, reduced resource usage, and optimization of on-farm production.
