The Prosecutor’s Office in Larissa, Central Greece, has filed criminal charges against the president of the country’s Railway Regulatory Authority (RAS) and Fire Department officials in connection with the fatal Tempi train crash in February 2023 which claimed the lives of 57 people, mostly students, and left dozens injured.
Following the recommendation of an examining magistrate, the prosecutor’s office has filed charges against RAS president for the intentional and repeated disruption of transportation security by omission as well as misdemeanors of manslaughter and negligence resulting in serious and minor bodily harm.
Charges for breach of duty were also filed against three preliminary investigative officers of the Greek Fire Service and a senior officer.
Cases against coroners and judicial experts included in the lawsuit by relatives of the victims have been archived. Public prosecutors not based in Larissa will be examining charges pressed against judicial officials.
Earlier on Tuesday, a train carrying 130 passengers collided with a truck in Avlida, Evia. There were no reported casualties.
The train crash in Tempi was the deadliest rail accident in Greece. The judicial procedure is ongoing after the families of the victims sued. In the aftermath of the crash, which appears to be the result of lacking maintenance, human error and outdated infrastructure, thousands of Greeks held demonstrations demanding punishment for those responsible.
