Α one-day strike for Wednesday declared by the union (DOE) representing kindergarten and primary teachers in Greek public schools was ruled illegal on Tuesday by an Athens first instance court.
The education ministry’s leadership had filed a motion against the industrial action in the court, while also requesting that similar 24-hour strikes by the same union be prohibited.
In its first reaction, the union’s leadership vowed to continue with the strike as planned, with the possibility of a separate industrial action declared by the tertiary ADEDY union, which represents civil servants in the country, for the same day, essentially a “cover” for holding the strike.
In a later development, ADEDY obliged and declared a strike for public school teachers.
Besides various salary demands, better workplace conditions and calls for more permanent staff hirings, the union has also demanded that the ministry take back its ground-breaking – by Greek standards – teacher evaluation framework.
