Council of State Rejects Motion Against Thessaloniki Motorway Project

The motion was filed earlier this month by three local citizens’ and environmental groups and generated a high court decision for a temporary stay in construction

The Council of State (CoS), Greece’s highest administrative court, on Wednesday threw out a motion to suspend construction work for the so-called “flyover” overpass being built above and adjacent to a current ring road.

The motion was filed earlier this month by three local citizens’ and environmental groups and generated a CoS decision for a temporary stay in construction – issued on April 9.

The top administrative court issued an order to the environmental ministry to submit all relevant documents and studies related to the project, especially environmental impact studies.

Construction is expected to resume immediately, given that the major infrastructure project in the northern Greece metropolis is deemed as imperative for relieving traffic congestion in the greater Thessaloniki area.

A one-line metro system is expected to be inaugurated in Thessaloniki later the year.
