The latest fatal instance of fatal domestic violence was played out, by all accounts, in a Corfu island village this week, with the victim in this case being a 68-year-old man allegedly stabbed to death by his 49-year-old wife.
Police were called to the victim’s residence by his 11-year-old daughter and immediately discovered her father’s life-less body. A later search turned up a kitchen knife in an outdoor garbage can that authorities believe is the murder weapon, along with clothing of the girl stained with the victim’s blood.
The man’s wife, of Russian descent, was first transferred to the main police headquarters on the Ionian island and subsequently confessed to the crime, police stated.
According to local media reports, previous allegations of domestic violence had been filed by both the husband and wife, with police officers called to the pair’s residence to defuse confrontations.
More cases of domestic violence are being documented in Greece over recent years, possibly on the back of more efficient reporting methods, efforts to sensitize law enforcement over the problem, greater media scrutiny and even social media pressure.
A handful of fatalities linked to domestic violence, with the vast majority being women, have also boosted public awareness and the state’s efforts to intervene before tragic results occur.
