A signing ceremony took place on Monday for the construction of 70-kilometer-long “urban walk” path for pedestrians and bicyclists extending roughly from the port city of Piraeus to Cape Sounion, in extreme southeast Attica Prefecture – essentially along the entire length of what’s now being billed as the coastal Athens Riviera.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was on hand for the ceremony, indicative of the gravity assigned by the conservative government to the overall property redevelopment of coastal southeast Athens, centering on the Helleniko privatization (The Ellinikon).

In brief statements, Mitsotakis said the project will be ready by the end of 2025, before adding:

“I read an article in the Financial Times about the Athens Riviera. Indeed, the development footprint is very important and not at the expense of local communities.”

He also said the government wants to ensure that the massive Helleniko property development will not come at the expense of the area’s residents.

According to the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), Greece’s semi-independent privatization agency, the unified network of bicycle and pedestrian routes aims at the unification of the urban coastline of southern and southeast Athens and the coastal municipalities extending southeast along the Saronic Gulf. The route of the promenade will hug the coastline while passing through various municipalities, regional government land, HRADF-held tracts and some 800 meters of The Ellinikon project.

Τhe ambitious project is funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
