Α sold-out concert was taking place on Friday night at the Panathenaic (Panathinaiko) stadium in central Athens in remembrance of the 52 victims of the February 2023 Tempi rail disaster.
An organization representing several families of the victims is organizing the musical concert, with local artists performing without compensation. Obstacles that stood before the event, including opposition by other family members of victims, were quickly overcome. Organizers said 38,000 tickets issued for the concert were all sold, with groups of people arriving at the venue to be near the concert.
The entrance fee is 15 euros, with organizers promising that the proceeds will be collected to cover future legal costs.
“One and a half years later, the relatives speak with the voice of the victims, and unite through pain and their loss, inviting us all to become the voice of the bereaved,” was the statement issued on the occasion.
The head on collision on evening of Feb. 23, 2023, of two trains at the south end of the Tempi gorge in north-central Greece remains the deadliest rail accident in the country.
