Two cattle corpses were reportedly washed up from the ocean to beaches on the Greek island Lefkada in the Ionian sea.
According to ilefkada, the first cow washed ashore on Pefkoulia beach, a popular nudist area in the southwestern part of the island, on Thursday. Swimmers immediately alerted the coast guard and fire department.
Authorities arrived at the scene and began a process of removing the body and decontaminating the area.
Preliminary investigations reported that the animal had a rope tied to its leg, which was attached to a heavy object, indicating that it had been thrown into the sea from a boat.
Not long after the first incident, another dead cow was found on Friday on Agios Ioannis beach, close to the center of the island.
A cleaning crew from the municipality, along with staff from the regional unit’s veterinary service, have been on-site since Friday morning.
Authorities have raised concerns that a ship may have dumped several dead animals and that more may be found in the coming days.
