A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Mount Athos, on the Athos peninsula in the northeastern Greece area at 18:11 local time on Saturday, February 15.

According to the initial assessment by the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located 8 kilometers northwest of Karyes, the administrative capital of the Monastic community, with a focal depth estimated at 5 kilometers.

The quake was preceded by a swarm of smaller tremors in the area, the largest of which measured 3.5 on the Richter scale.

A few minutes later, at 18:26, residents in the area felt another tremor, this time of lower intensity.

According to the Geodynamic Institute, the new earthquake measured 2.3 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter located 12 kilometers west-northwest of Karyes.
